"Legend says that the first Mom tattoo was on the chest of an Irish sailor. He’d left home to explore the open sea. One day, he was singing a sailor song and stopped after the line “kissed me darling mother.” Missing her, he had a heart with her name tattooed on his chest.
I remember when I left home for college. The van was packed and idling outside. I stood at the entrance to the kitchen and called out to Lola. “Grandma, I’m leaving now.” She put down her ladle and shuffled over to me from the stove. She put her forehead on my chest and hugged me, just for a moment. She let go and returned to her cooking. She didn’t say a word. I lingered in the silence, watching her work. I went outside and hopped into the van. And then I left home to explore the open sea." ~ Kenneth

The Lola x Kenneth Collaboration is a project by Crescenciana—Kenneth's grandmother, or “lola” in Tagalog—and Kenneth. When Lola was ninety-four years old, he moved back home to San Jose, CA to help care for her, and they started working together. Lola made paintings in watercolor, and he drew her memories on top of them. When Lola passed, she left behind her paintings, and he decided to finish everything she started. He promised.
